Visiting Britain's Top 50 Folklore & Superstition Locations

I’m on a mission to visit all of Britain’s Top 50 Folklore & Superstition locations!

Britain is filled with unique, unusual and spooky locations. From famous ghosts at haunted Hampton Court all the way up to the Loch Ness monster in Scotland, there is so much to see and discover.

Which is why I’ve challenged myself to visit them all! Well, the top 50 folklore & superstition locations anyway.

I’ll be using STG’s Craftily Conjured Great British Folklore and Superstition Map (from Marvellous Maps) for reference, which not only features over 1,400 legendary locations but includes a fun top 50 challenge. The challenge highlights Britain’s most mythical locations, along with a legendary road trip that links them all up.

What a fun challenge, am I right?!

I’ll be sharing the progress of this challenge here on The Morbid Tourist, as well as over on a dedicated Instagram account @spookytop50. Though the official name of the challenge/list is Britain’s Top 50 Folklore & Superstition locations, that Instagram username is too long! So in most instances, I’ll be referring to it as the Spooky Top 50 Challenge, but I will, of course, be following the one highlighted above.

I also give full credit to Marvellous Maps for this challenge: I am taking part in the challenge they outlined for fun. It is not my challenge, nor have I decided on the locations*

*To be transparent, I briefly worked with Marvellous Maps in a customer service role in 2023. However, I was a fan of their products for a long time before this. I was gifted the Great British Folklore and Superstition Map by my boyfriend sometime in 2021/2022, not long after I came up with the idea of The Morbid Tourist.

In fact, undertaking this challenge has been my plan for a good few years now! I visited my first location, Rendlesham Forest, in 2023, and a few others before that (which I haven’t counted as I didn’t visit them ‘in full’).

My only rules (so far) are:

I must visit every location fully, to the best of my ability. For example, I have lived in Bedfordshire most of my life but I had never really visited any of the spooky locations mentioned on the map. So although I have ‘visited’, I won’t count this until I have visited all of those individual spots!
I will post about each location in the best order I can, but this won’t always be possible. For example, I’ve been working through some of this challenge for around about a year now but I’m only posting about it now as I wanted to get at least five locations under my belt before I shared everything. Y’know, cause life sometimes gets in the way. Some locations I have visited more than once too. And some I may plan to visit more than once before sharing, to make sure it really counts/I get to do everything.
