What is Dark Tourism?

The term ‘dark tourism’ was coined in 1996 and, in a very broad sense, is generally defined as travelling to places associated with death and tradegy. It’s also the art of exploring haunted places, macabre history, folklore legends, and all the weird and wonderful corners of the world.

Though the concept was originally related to a much darker form of travel, today dark tourism also includes lighter, alternative spots like guided ghost walks, scare attractions, and spiritual locations. Simply put, a morbid tourist seeks out eerie and unusual places – not just those tied to tragedy.
