York Ghost Walks: The Best Spooky Tours to Take in the City of 1,000 Ghosts

01.06.25 | Louise | No Comments

York is packed with ghost tours – but which ones are actually worth your time? From the classic ghost walks to magical walking tours, here is my dark tourist-approved guide to the best spooky experiences in the city.

If you’ve ever visited the wonderfully historic city of York, you’ll know it’s packed with ghost tours – especially if you’re a dark tourist like me! With its gory past, grisly legends, and haunted alleyways, York is filled with spooky things to do, but taking a ghost tour is a must. After all, what better way to explore the “City of 1,000 Ghosts”?

It’s also a great way to get your bearings of the city. Most tours include a bit of local history alongside the hauntings, which means you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation of York and probably a few extra places to add to your must-visit list.

Of course, the problem is picking one. There are so many to choose from, and each one offers its own twist. Some focus on dark history and true crime, others lean into witchcraft or comedy horror, and a few offer a more traditional (but still brilliant!) ghost walk. And since most York itineraries are jam-packed, it’s hard to know which one fits your vibe, your schedule, and your spooky threshold. So which is the best ghost tour in York?

That’s where this post comes in. Whether you’re visiting York for the first time or returning for more spooky shenanigans, I’ve put together a hand-picked guide to some of the best and most unique ghost and dark history tours the city has to offer.

The Best Ghost Tours in York

So, what makes a ghost tour the best? For me, it’s a mix of atmosphere, storytelling, and anything new you learn in the process! I love a tour that delves into lesser-known stories or leaves me walking away with lots of new places added to my must-visit list.

Some of York’s tours lean into theatrics and jump scares, others are all about chilling facts and historical detail. A few even go off the rails in magical or mysterious directions.

This list includes a little bit of everything: classic ghost walks, immersive dark history experiences, witchcraft-themed tours, and quirky twists like the Ghost Bus. Some are better for first-timers, others for ghost walk veterans looking for something new.

I’ve hand-picked these based on their themes, uniqueness, and spooky appeal, so whether you’re into haunted pubs, witches, or stories of plague and punishment, you’ll hopefully find a tour (or two) that fits your style.

Let’s dive in.

Classic Ghost Tours in York

Ready to explore the most haunted city in Europe? These tours dive into York’s paranormal past, from creepy alleyways to cursed pubs and infamous spirits.

The Deathly Dark Ghost Tour

💡 Perfect for: Fans of theatrical storytelling and hidden hauntings

The award-winning Deathly Dark Tour blends theatrical storytelling with a dash of dark comedy – perfect if you like your ghost stories with a bit of drama and dry humour. Originally launched online during 2020, the tour became so popular it quickly made its way onto York’s cobbled streets.

Led by one of five charismatic performers, each with their own eerie persona, the tour explores some of York’s lesser-known ghost stories alongside infamous favourites. Expect tales of the plague house on College Street, the ghostly children of Bedern, and other chilling moments from the city’s haunted history.

York Ghost Bus Tour

💡 Perfect for: Something a bit different and a lighter side of spooky

You’ve probably seen the York Ghost Bus Tour trundling past – it’s kind of hard to miss! The vintage-style black double-decker is decked out with Gothic details and flickering lamps inside, giving it an eerie old-world feel. If the name sounds familiar, you might’ve come across its spooky siblings in London or Edinburgh too.

The Ghost Bus is the UK’s only comedy-horror theatre experience on wheels, offering a theatrical take on York’s grisly past. Expect a mix of dark humour, local legends, and spine-tingling stories as you cruise past the city’s most haunted spots – including York Minster, Clifford’s Tower, and the grave of Dick Turpin.

There are even a few opportunities to hop off the bus and soak up the creepy atmosphere in person (don’t worry – they won’t try to drive you down the Shambles).

I took the London Ghost Bus Tour a while back, and it’s still one of my all-time favourites. The York version promises the same mix of laughs, lore, and lingering spirits – with a good dash of spooky fun.

😱 Spooky Rating: 4/5 | 💵 Cost: £20 | ⏱️ Length: 75 mins | 🔗 Book Here

Mad Alice historical clothing stands on a wooden staircase, outside of York's Barley Hall, gesturing with one hand outstretched and an expressive face, as if speaking or performing. The background features timber-framed walls.

Mad Alice’s Bloody Tour of York

💡 Perfect for: Fantastic storytelling and intriguing stories that you’ll remember for weeks afterwards

Mad Alice’s Bloody Tour of York was the very first ghost tour I took in the city – and it’s still one of my absolute favourites. Led by the brilliantly charismatic Mad Alice, this award-winning walk is as entertaining as it is informative.

Expect tales of witches, queens, murderers, and hauntings you won’t hear on most other tours. One of my favourite moments was learning about the dark history of the Shambles – a street usually known for its whimsical charm. The tour also winds past major landmarks like York Minster and Clifford’s Tower, with a strong focus on the city’s more gruesome, grim, and gory side.

Plus, Mad Alice regularly shares spooky tidbits about York on social media, so you know you’re in the hands of someone who really knows her stuff!

Update: New for 2025, The Bloody Tour of York is now led by both Mad Alice and Lady Peckett. The surprise is not knowing who will turn up to lead your tour on the night! Mad Alice has also launched a new Bloody Execution Tour, exclusive to Tuesday and Saturday mornings, if you want to ensure you get a tour with the lady herself.

Dark Tales of York

💡 Perfect for: Small groups, intimate vibes, and your best shot at seeing a ghost 👻

If you’re looking for something a little more intimate – but more affordable than a private one-on-one tour – Dark Tales of York is a great pick. This small-group tour takes you to several of York’s most paranormally active spots, including the Roman Bath pub and museum (yes, there’s an actual Roman bath house beneath the bar!) and the Golden Fleece, said to be the most haunted pub in York.

This tour definitely focuses more on hauntings than humorous jump scares, with some grisly history thrown in.

😱 Spooky Rating: 3/5 | 💵 Cost: £48 per group | ⏱️ Length: 1.5 hours | 🔗 Book Here

A street view of two old buildings: the Golden Fleece pub, famed for being York's most haiunted pub and one of the most spooky places in the UK, and its golden sheep sign on the left, and the York Gin shop with large windows and shelves of bottles on the right. Both have timber-framed upper floors.

Spooky History & Unusual Tours

More into true crime and historical horrors? These experiences mix York’s dark past with immersive storytelling, eerie locations, and a few twisted surprises.

Immersive Murder Mystery in York, A City Treasure Hunt Experience

💡 Perfect for: A self-guided adventure with a dark and curious twist

Now I know this isn’t technically a ghost walking tour in York, but because it’s quite unique, I had to include it! If you’re looking for something a bit more immersive and self-paced, why not consider Immersive Murder Mystery in York, A City Treasure Hunt Experience?

Okay, so this one isn’t technically a ghost tour – but it’s such a unique experience, I had to include it. If you’re after something more immersive and self-paced, this treasure hunt–style murder mystery offers a brilliant twist on the usual walking tour format.

Set in 1491, you’ll explore York using your phone to uncover clues, solve riddles, and try to catch a killer. Along the way, you’ll visit hidden gems, historical landmarks, spooky pubs, and eerie alleyways – plus you can pause for two optional pub stops, which you’ll probably need after all that walking!

It’s a great choice if you’re after something a bit different but still firmly in the realm of murder, mystery, and macabre.

😱 Spooky Rating: 1/5 | 💵 Cost: £15 | ⏱️ Length: 2-ish hours (self-paced) | 🔗 Book Here

An illustrated map showcases eerie figures and locations from York's dark history, including the York Minster, Guy Fawkes, Vikings, plague doctor, torturer, witch, courtroom, executioner, ghosts, and Dick Turpin.

The York Dungeons

💡 Perfect for: Impressive sets and unique storytelling

Okay, it’s not technically a walking tour – but it’s definitely a tour through York’s darkest and grimmest history, so I had to include it. And I am such a massive fan of all the Dungeons shows around the UK and beyond (I’ve visited so many and hope one day I can tick off all of them!). They’re just so much fun.

The York Dungeons is a spooky, theatrical experience featuring ten live actor shows, including Vengeance of the Vikings, City Ghosts, and Curse of the Witch. Each set is immersive and uses special effects, detailed staging, and dark humour to bring York’s gruesome past to life.

Expect jump scares, laughs, and maybe even a scream or two as you’re plunged into tales of plagues, punishments, and haunted history.

They also run a family-friendly walking tour during spooky season, led by the Jester – perfect for little peasants who might find the dungeon experience a bit too intense.

😱 Spooky Rating: 4/5 | 💵 Cost: £20 | ⏱️ Length: 75 mins | 🔗 Book Here

shadows of York: Ghost Walk and Horrible History

💡 Perfect for: Fans of true crime, plague pits, and history with a spooky twist

The fact that this tour departs from the Guy Fawkes Inn on High Petergate tells you everything you need to know about this walking tour – it’s not just about ghosts, it’s also about York’s dark and unique history! Explore lesser-known areas of the city while encountering grim history and ghostly tales, from gruesome executions to deadly outbreaks of plague.

The Shadows of York tour explores some of the city’s lesser-known corners, combining tales of hauntings, horrible histories, and infamous figures. Led by a costumed guide through dimly lit alleys and haunted corners, the route covers chilling episodes from York’s past without relying on jump scares or theatrics – just good storytelling and atmospheric streets.

Not sure where to start? This one’s ideal for dark tourists who love creepy detail over theatrics.

😱 Spooky Rating: 2/5 | 💵 Cost: £13 | ⏱️ Length: 1.5 hours | 🔗 Book Here

The shop front of the famous York Ghost Merchants, based in one of the most spooky places in the UK. There's a sign hanging down, with their logo of two torches crossed over each other and the name The York Ghost Merchants.

Magical & Witchy Walks in York

Looking for something a little more magical than macabre? These tours explore York’s links to witchcraft, magic, and the mysterious – perfect for curious minds and fantasy fans alike.

Harry Potter Guided Walking Tour

💡 Perfect for: Harry Potter fans who like a mix of fun and real-world history

We all know York is well known for its links to Harry Potter – despite no scenes actually having shot there! Regardless, this magical city is the perfect place to visit for Harry Potter fans.

This interactive walking tour explores York’s connections to Harry Potter and the real-life inspirations behind some of the series’ most iconic locations. Expect trivia quizzes, the chance to dress up in costume, and even the opportunity to re-enact famous scenes from the films.

While the tour is clearly themed around Harry Potter, it also includes a dose of York’s real history, so there’s something here even for casual fans or magical history buffs.

😱 Spooky Rating: 0/5 | 💵 Cost: £14 | ⏱️ Length: 2 hours | 🔗 Book Here

A smiling person in a black witch costume and hat stands by a stone wall holding a broom, about to lead York's Witches and History Old Town Walking Tour. The wall has a street sign reading "WHIP-MA-WHOP-MA-GATE" and pigeons are visible nearby.

Witches and History Old Town Walking Tour

💡 Perfect for: History lovers with an interest in real witch trials and folklore

See a different side of York on this witchcraft-themed walking tour, led by a characterful costumed witch (You’ll love her funny and endearing nicknames for you all!). You’ll uncover real stories of Yorkshire’s suspected witches, blending true history with immersive storytelling as you explore the city’s historic streets.

This tour takes you to lesser-known corners and iconic sites alike, including St Crux Church, York Minster, Petergate, and Swinegate. Along the way, you’ll learn about infamous figures such as Mad Alice (the real one, not the tour guide!), John Wrightson, Mary Bateman, and Margaret Clitheroe.

I really loved this tour – before I booked, I wasn’t sure whether it would truly focus on witchcraft or whether it was just a spooky twist on York’s past with a costumed character. But it truly did delve into witchcraft history – not only in York but also in surrounding areas. And the history of witchcraft altogether! Although the tour did include some general dark history stories from the city as well – the classic ones that all tours covered – it was a great focus on something different.

Unlike most ghost tours that blend paranormal tales with history, this one is rooted more in the true, often tragic, history of witch trials in York, with a few spooky stories woven in for good measure. It’s also a great choice for something off the beaten path after the classic York ghost walks.

Wizard Walk of York Tour – Magic, Comedy & Family Fun

💡 Perfect for: Families with mini muggles, or adults who enjoy lighthearted magic

As York’s only walking tour designed specifically for families with children – this magical-themed tour is the perfect pick for mini muggles and young magic fans. While it’s not an official Harry Potter tour, the Wizard Walk of York is packed with spellbinding sights, illusions, and family-friendly humour.

Led by a costumed wizard guide, this award-winning tour leans more into magic and comedy than spooky stories. You’ll visit some of York’s most charming and mysterious spots, including the Shambles, Mad Alice Lane, St William’s College, and York Minster.

You can even upgrade your experience by adding a wand kit to use during the tour! Though designed with kids in mind, adults are absolutely welcome – with or without little witches and wizards in tow.

😱 Spooky Rating: 0/5 | 💵 Cost: £11 | ⏱️ Length: 75 mins | 🔗 Book Here

FAQs & Tips for York Ghost Tours

Planning your first ghost walk in York – or thinking of squeezing in a few? Here are some common questions I get asked, plus a few tips to help you make the most of your spooky evening…

Are ghost tours in York scary?

They can be! I’d argue that the best ghost walk York must be at least a little scary! But most are more about storytelling and atmosphere than full-on jump scares. Some tours (like The Deathly Dark Tour or Shadows of York) lean into eerie tales and real history, while others – like The Ghost Bus Tour – mix spooky vibes with humour and theatrics. If you’re nervous about getting too spooked, check the “Spooky Rating” under each tour for a quick guide.

Are York ghost walks suitable for kids?

Some are, but not all. Many tours are aimed at adults, especially those that include darker historical content or theatrical scares. If you’re travelling with younger guests, the Wizard Walk of York or The York Dungeon’s Jester Tour (seasonal) are more family-friendly picks.

How long do ghost tours usually last?

Most York ghost walks last between 75 and 90 minutes, though some immersive or self-guided experiences (like the Murder Mystery Treasure Hunt) can run up to 2.5 hours. I’ve included tour length under each listing to help you plan your itinerary.

What should I bring or wear?

  • Comfortable shoes are a must – some tours feature a lot of walking and York has lots of old cobbled streets!
  • Dress for the weather: most tours run rain or shine.
  • If you’re doing a self-guided tour, make sure your phone is charged and maybe bring a portable charger.

Can I do more than one tour in a night?

It’s possible! Some tours run earlier in the evening (around 6–7pm), while others start later. Just be sure to check the start and end times, and maybe factor in a quick pub break in between. You won’t want to rush if you’re soaking in the spooky atmosphere – or doing a little ghost-spotting at the Golden Fleece between walks.

Are York ghost walks accessible?

Accessibility varies depending on the tour. York’s historic streets can be uneven, narrow, or steep in places, which can make some routes tricky for wheelchair users or those with mobility needs. Some tours do their best to accommodate, but it’s always a good idea to contact the organisers in advance to confirm. I recommend reaching out directly to the tour company if you want to be sure!

Other Tips for Taking a Ghost Tour

  • Be respectful. Not everyone on your tour will believe in ghosts – and that’s okay! Whether you’re a true believer or a sceptic, everyone deserves to enjoy the experience.
  • Go easy on the Dutch courage. A drink beforehand is fine (we’ve all been there), but most tours don’t allow intoxicated guests. Don’t be the one who gets turned away at the start!
  • Use the loo beforehand. Trust me – this one’s personal. I once had to leave the London Ghost Bus Tour midway to find a toilet, and I’ve regretted it ever since.
  • Ask before taking photos or videos. Most guides are happy for you to snap pics of haunted locations, but filming the whole tour on your phone is usually frowned upon.
  • Let your guide know if you’re taking notes. I often jot things down on my phone during tours so I can look them up later or revisit a stop on my own. I always let the guide know first – it’s polite, and helps avoid looking like I’m just texting through their stories.
  • End with a haunted pint. If you can, pop into one of York’s haunted pubs after your tour. It’s the perfect way to debrief, soak in the atmosphere, and maybe spot a ghost of your own…

Final Thoughts on York Ghost Walks

Whether you’re into gruesome history, ghostly legends, or something a little more magical, York really does have a spooky tour for everyone. It’s one of the most haunted cities in Europe – and there’s no better way to explore its darker side than by stepping into the shadows with a local guide and taking one of the best ghost walks in York.

If you’ve been on a ghost tour in York that you absolutely loved (or hated!), I’d love to hear about it – drop your recommendations in the comments below. Or if you’re planning your first haunted adventure, let me know which one you’re leaning towards!
