Did you know that York is often described as one of the most enchanting cities in the UK? With its rich history and centuries-old legends, it’s a place where history and fantasy blend seamlessly together.

York has always had a magical feel to it – from its twisting medieval lanes to its centuries-old folklore. It’s a city where witchcraft legends, mystical stories and spooky vibes blend together to create something truly enchanting.

Of course, York has also earned a reputation as a Harry Potter hotspot, thanks to its Diagon Alley-like streets, wizard-themed attractions, and magical experiences.

Whether you’re fascinated by witches and alchemists, love a magical adventure or want to immerse yourself in a wizarding world, York is packed with magic waiting to be explored. Here are the most mystical, magical and witchy things to do in York.

A street view of two old buildings: the Golden Fleece pub, famed for being York's most haiunted pub and its golden sheep sign on the left, and the York Gin shop with large windows and shelves of bottles on the right. Both have timber-framed upper floors.

Real Magic, Witchcraft & Folklore in York

York has its own share of dark history when it comes to witchcraft. Like much of England in the 16th and 17th centuries, accusations of witchcraft spread like wildfire, leading to trials, executions, and widespread fear.

Jennet Preston – one of the victims of the Pendle Witch Trials in 1612 – had associations with York. Although she lived in Gisburn, Yorkshire, her trial took place at the York Assizes, and she was hanged at the Knavesmire – now the site of York Racecourse.

There’s also the chilling tale of Mary Batemen, better known as the Yorkshire Witch! Originally from Asenby, Mary moved to York when she was 20 before later settling in Leeds, where she gained notoriety as a fortune-teller, con artist, and eventual murderer. In the early 19th century, she was held at York Prison and later executed in front of thousands. Her body was put on public display, attracting more than 2,500 visitors. Strips of her skin were removed, turned into leather, and sold as ‘magic’ charms to ward off evil spirits.

Today, York embraces its historical connections to witchcraft through various tours and attractions. Let’s delve into all the magical things to do in York.

Wander Down The Shambles

Often cited as the inspiration for Diagon Alley, The Shambles is a charming medieval street lined with cobbled stones and crooked timber-framed buildings, creating an enchanting, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Though it can be crowded, visit off-peak, early in the morning or during the witching hour to truly soak up the atmosphere. I once remember wandering down it one winter evening as it lightly started to rain, listening to someone busking not too far away – it felt so magical!

Historically, it was home to apothecaries and butchers, adding an extra layer of dark history. In fact, the term ‘Shambles’ comes from medieval times and refers to the stalls or benches on which meat was displayed. Whilst the street was primarily known for its butchers, there is evidence that apothecaries operated nearby, adding to the street’s ties to historical magic and mysticism.

Today, The Shambles is filled with magical and whimsical shops, including The Potions Cauldron, which embraces York’s history of alchemy and apothecaries with an immersive, potion-themed experience.

A smiling person in a black witch costume and hat stands by a stone wall holding a broom, about to lead York's Witches and History Old Town Walking Tour. The wall has a street sign reading "WHIP-MA-WHOP-MA-GATE" and pigeons are visible nearby.

Take a Witches and History Old Town Walking Tour

This spellbinding walking tour starts at Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate and winds through York’s historic old town, uncovering the true tales of witches from York and the surrounding area. Led by a charismatic guide dressed as a witch, this tour is heaps of fun, but includes some darker parts too! Along the way, you’ll hear chilling stories of dark history, witchcraft, and the supernatural, making it perfect for those who want something a bit different from your usual ghost walk.

Drink Under the Devil’s Gaze at The Evil Eye Lounge

Tucked away on Stonegate, one of York’s oldest streets, The Evil Eye Lounge is a place of mysticism, curses, and cocktails. Its name references the ancient superstition of the Evil Eye curse, feared in Yorkshire folklore. Locals once used charms and spells to ward off its bad luck, and now you can escape its gaze by stepping inside this whimsical, quirky bar. With its weird and wonderful décor, hidden courtyard, and walls of curiosities, it feels like a modern-day alchemist’s den – a perfect spot for those drawn to the magical and mysterious.

A small red devil statue with black horns and beard sits crouched on a blue metal beam outside a building, near a window and security camera.

💀 Grave Notes: Just across from the bar, you’ll spot York’s Printer’s Devil – a little red imp perched above a shop. Linked to mystical folklore, this eerie figure is said to watch over the city’s printers. You might want to check it out before heading into the Evil Eye Lounge though – otherwise, after a few drinks, you may start questioning if that little devil is watching you…

Drink & Dine at The House of the Trembling Madness

Step into a world of medieval superstition, folklore, and mystery at this historic tavern. Located in a building dating back to 1180 AD, the House of the Trembling Madness radiates an old-world atmosphere reminiscent of an alchemist’s lair. The name itself refers to Delirium Tremens, once thought to bring on strange visions – perhaps even encounters with spirits or demons. Surrounded by rustic wooden beams, taxidermy, and flickering candlelight, this alehouse is a place where history, folklore, and the supernatural blur together.

A whimsical, furry dragon head with horns rests on a bar counter, surrounded by large glowing crystals, glass bottles, and a menu titled "Dragon's Breath" in a dimly lit, fantasy-themed setting. This is inside York's Society Of Alchemists.

Visit The Society Of Alchemists

Tucked away on The Shambles, The Society of Alchemists is a shop that truly looks like an ancient apothecary – but don’t expect bubbling potions or spellbooks here. Instead, this enchanting store specialises in luxurious bath and body products, along with whimsical gifts inspired by the art of alchemy.

The shop has an intriguing backstory steeped in magic, with legends of mystical transformations and secret elixirs woven into its origins. Guarding its entrance is the great dragon Ouroboros, a symbol of eternity and renewal, watching over those who dare to step inside.

Harry Potter in York: Must-Visit Magical Locations

Looking for Harry Potter things to do in York? Although no scenes were actually shot in York, this historic city has carved out lots of links to the magical franchise and is the perfect place to visit for Harry Potter fans. From exploring locations that inspired J.K. Rowling’s iconic series to engaging in themed tours and activities, York is brimming with opportunities to immerse yourself in the magical world of Harry Potter. Here are some of the best Harry Potter York locations and things to do.

A storefront with the sign “THE SHOP THAT MUST NOT BE NAMED” in gold letters above large windows displaying Harry Potter-themed merchandise and decorations. The shop has a dark exterior and brick walls.

Browse The Shop That Must Not Be Named

A must-visit for all Harry Potter fans, The Shop That Must Not Be Named was the first wizard-themed shop to open along The Shambles – one of York’s most atmospheric streets and often cited as the inspiration for Diagon Alley.

Step inside this cosy, spellbinding shop, where you’ll find official Harry Potter merchandise, from wands and house robes to curious magical novelties. The shop’s warm, enchanting ambience makes it feel like stepping into the wizarding world itself. Before you leave, don’t forget to stop outside by the ‘Park Your Broom’ sign for a fun photo opportunity!

A hand holds a glass of brown drink topped with a large swirl of whipped cream in front of a window with glowing "The Potion's Cauldron" sign and warm lights inside.
A hand holds a red frozen drink with a black straw in front of wooden shelves stocked with bottles and boxes of merchandise. The background is softly lit, emphasizing the drink in the foreground.

Brew Elixirs at The Potions Cauldron

Further down The Shambles, you’ll find The Potions Cauldron, a wizard-themed café and apothecary offering mystical drinks and immersive potion experiences. Perfect for those craving hands-on magic, there’s plenty to discover here.

Take part in an adults-only potion cauldron experience, or enrol in the Potion Academy, where you’ll craft potions and even try your hand at flying a broomstick – a must for any aspiring witch or wizard. For a more spellbinding treat, indulge in a Wizard Afternoon Tea, with all its ingredients sourced from local shops along The Shambles – a charming nod to the street’s magical atmosphere.

Short on time? You can still pop into the shop to grab bottled potions, enchanting drinks, and sweet treats to take away.

💀 Grave Notes: I highly recommend picking up a Butterbeer to sip as you wander through The Shambles – it’s the perfect way to soak in the magic. Even better? Enjoy it while waiting in line to adopt a ghost from The York Ghost Merchants!

Do (or Don’t!) Miss: York Railway Station

Many people claim that a bridge at York Railway Station was used in a very brief scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. However, after comparing the scene in question with footage from both King’s Cross (where the rest of the scenes were filmed) and York Railway Station, I’m not convinced this is the case.

That said, York Railway Station is undeniably beautiful and worth a visit, regardless of its connection (or lack thereof) to Harry Potter. So, is it actually a filming location? The jury’s still out…

Take on the Harry Potter-Inspired Escape Room at The Piccadilly

Step into a world of magic and mystery in this fun wizard-themed escape room at The Piccadilly. Gather your fellow witches and wizards to crack enchanted puzzles, decipher cryptic clues, and unlock hidden secrets before time runs out! Designed to test your wits and teamwork, this immersive adventure is perfect for Harry Potter fans and escape-room fans. After your daring escape, celebrate with a cocktail and a bite to eat at the restaurant—the food looks so tasty!

A wall with a black sign displaying 9¾ under a crest, resembling the iconic platform from the Harry Potter series, set against a background of brickwork and steel beams.

It looks a little like this… just in red! This one is from the Harry Potter Studio Tour.

Find the Platform 9 3/4 Sign at York Railway Museum

Now, this one’s a bit of a stretch, but if you’re visiting the York Railway Museum anyway (which you absolutely should – it’s free and genuinely fascinating!), then be sure to hunt down this hidden Harry Potter gem.

This small but fun Easter egg for Potter fans is hidden somewhere within the National Railway Museum. While some claim it’s tucked away in the Warehouse, others insist it’s in the North Shed and others claim it’s in Station Hall! But the best way to find out? Go on a magical hunt and track it down yourself!

Please note, Station Hall is currently closed for refurbishment and is due to re-open in September 2025.

Tucked away at the back of the North Shed, you’ll find a train sign for Platform 9¾, a little nod to the wizarding world hiding in plain sight. Once upon a time, the Hogwarts Express was also on display here – fingers crossed it makes a return one day!

A themed room with wooden barrels, crates, and shelves, decorated with vintage papers and lanterns, giving an old-timey storage or speakeasy vibe. Footprints and signs are marked on the wooden floor.
A dimly lit, rustic corner with potted plants on stacked drawers. A wooden ramp labeled "INTO THE DRAWER" leads up to the drawers, surrounded by wooden walls, greenery, and a faint blue-green light. The photo is taken from York's Hole In Wand Harry Potter-themed crazy golf, one of the most magical things to do in York.

Play The Hole In Wand Crazy Golf

Harry Potter fans will love this magical-themed crazy golf experience! Perfect for a rainy day, this nine-hole adventure is packed with bubbling cauldrons, magical portals, and whimsical surprises – at one point, I even had to climb through a fireplace!

With plenty of fun photo opportunities and an enchanted atmosphere, it’s a great activity for all ages. Plus, every player is rewarded with a free magic potion upon completing the course – because what’s a wizarding challenge without a little alchemy?

💀 Grave Notes: It’s definitely worth upgrading to a premium ticket – for just £2 extra, you’ll get a magical phial of poison (alcohol) to mix into your potion. A bewitching way to end your game!

Extraordinary Experiences & Events

Looking for magical experiences beyond the usual sights? York is home to many mystical festivals and spellbinding activities that bring its magic and folklore to life. Whether you want to embark on an enchanting quest, join a gathering of witches, or uncover York’s hidden mysteries, these experiences will immerse you in York’s enchanting and mysterious side.

Here are some of the will immerse you in York’s enchanting and mysterious side.

A woven basket on straw holds dried lavender, potion bottles, mushrooms, rolled papers, and books, set next to leafy branches at an outdoor market or fair.
A dimly lit room viewed through a wooden railing, featuring an angled window and a cluttered desk with candles, glass bottles, books, and scientific instruments, creating a vintage, mysterious atmosphere.

Attend The Witches’ Coven Event

Every summer, the Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel hosts The Witches’ Coven, a truly bewitching gathering in the heart of York. Best of all, The Witches’ Coven is free to attend, and every guest receives exclusive discounts and special offers for York’s best events, attractions, and mystical businesses.

I attended the event for the first time in 2025 and absolutely loved it. It was without a doubt one of the most magical things to do in York for me, and it was a truly special experience.

💀 Grave Notes: This tour is designed with families in mind, but adults are more than welcome to book on – with or without kids!

Shop window with a neon lucky cat sign, colourful figurines displayed inside, and text explaining the cat's history. Reflection of brick buildings on the glass, and a flyer box attached to the wall outside.

Seek Out York’s Enchanted Cat Guardians

The York Cat Trail is a self-guided hunt through York’s historic streets in search of the city’s famous cat statues. There are believed to be around 35 cats hidden across the city, making it a fun and unique way to explore. These mysterious feline guardians have been watching over York for centuries, adding to its folklore and charm. Most of them are black—and after all, what’s a bigger association with witches than black cats?

Download a free copy of the York Cat Trail here or pick up a trail map in person at The Cat Gallery or York Lucky Cats Shop – where you can even adopt your own York Lucky Cat!.

Experience WizardFest: York’s First Festival of Wizardry

Brand new for 2025, WizardFest is co-hosted between The Wizard Walk of York and Little Vikings as a family-friendly event that champions both York’s magical side and independent businesses – how lovely! Though most of the events are catered towards children, there are some events adults will enjoy too, such as Harry Potter films screening at City Screen Picturehouse – with more to be announced!

A shopfront with large windows displays signs for The Magic World of Professor Adolphus and posters with gold frames. A church and greenery are visible in the background.

Visit a World of Illusions at The Puzzling World of Professor Kettlestring

This new mind-bending attraction is filled with optical illusions, interactive exhibits, and reality-defying rooms that challenge perception. While not strictly magic, its whimsical tricks and puzzling experiences create a sense of wonder that fits right into York’s mystical side. Perfect for curious minds of all ages! And between you and me, I do think optical illusions are quite magical…
